Beware of the Phishing Emails

A quick PSA to customers using cPanel emails accounts! Our diligent tech support team have lately noticed a trend of inbound phishing emails, that look a little like the below:

These emails are, in essence, your everyday phishing scam, designed to fool you into clicking on the link which will take you to a page that will try to extract your password from you.

The page will be dressed up to look official, and in particularly sophisticated examples, can look identical to the real login page it is imitating. However, rather than you logging into your email account, your details will actually instead be immediately sent off to the scammer who can then access your account at their leisure – using it to steal your sensitive information, other accounts, or send further spam/scams to other people.

To protect yourself from falling victim to a scam such as the above, keep an eye out for the From address – ensure it matches the company name you’d expect it to come from. However, even then, the From address can be faked. To know for sure, you can open up the original headers of your email and check the exact origin address, though usually, you do not have to go this far to identify a scam. Instead, look out for common signs such as poor spelling and grammar, generic statements that don’t really make a lot of sense or sentences that seem very dramatic or threatening.

We decided to proof-read our sample above to point out some rather prominent flaws in its legitimacy. Stay safe everyone!
