What is Web Hosting?

When you have selected and registered a domain name, the next step to take is to get web hosting. To have a website hosted, it must have a domain name allocated to the site.

Website Hosting means that your website is stored on a server, so people can access and browse your site at any time. The domain name is used to point the internet user, using an internet browser such as Chrome or Firefox, in the direction of your website that is located on the server, and in turn, the server ‘serves’ the information stored i.e. the website, to the internet user through the internet browser.

Services associated with hosting a website varies from host to host. Website hosting is one of our core services available to our clients. When a website is hosted by us, it is stored on one of our many servers located in our Sydney data centre. It is then accessible by anyone with an internet connection around the world.

At Digital Pacific we ensure that your site is regularly backed up (3 times a day to be exact) so if anything were to happen, we have a full, up to date backup of your data on high grade Dell hardware with mirrored drives. Digital Pacific has 24/7 Australian based phone support lines, every day of the year. So, no matter where you are located, we will always be online to help with any issues, regardless of the plan you are on.

At Digital Pacific we care about the environment, and all of our servers are ‘Green Powered’.

There are several types of web hosting available to our clients, and each is tailored to specific personal or business needs. If you need help choosing please call our friendly team on 1300 694 678 or Email us here..

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is the name of your website – i.e It is like the physical address you type into a GPS to get where you want to go, and how people looking for your website can find your page. Choosing a suitable domain name for your page and / or business is vital. There are many factors to deciding on a domain name, and we have an entire article dedicated to choosing the right domain name in our blog.

A domain name also includes the tail section of the entire URL, i.e. – There are many different variations that can be used depending on your needs, each with varying costs depending on its popularity and demand.

It is possible to purchase a domain name to secure it for a later date, without web hosting for your website. Another reason why you could purchase a domain name and not host it is if you have more than one domain name associated to your site. For example, if you own both ‘’ and ‘’ , one site may be redirected to the other, to point both sites to one page. So if you were to visit both of those Domain Names, they would take you to the same page.

If you are looking to Register, Transfer or Manage and Renew a Domain Name, Digital Pacific offers Domain Names as a standard service.

What does Shared Hosting mean?

Shared web hosting is a fast, cost efficient way of getting online. Your site will be sharing the resources of one of our state-of-the-art servers with other websites and, while this may not be suitable for a larger high-volume website, its perfect from small businesses and personal projects.

Shared hosting means that the server that your website is stored on is being shared with other websites. The resources of that server are split between each website, and it is the cheapest web hosting plan that is available at Digital Pacific. Our hosting plans start from $6.90 per month, ranging from small simple plans for personal sites and blogs, to larger business sites looking to start or expand an eCommerce website.

Shared website hosting is perfect for people in the beginning stages of their online presence. You won’t be expecting a lot of traffic to your site initially; however, you can build a good foundation on which you can grow easily and efficiently once the time comes to upgrade, should you want to. You will be notified when we believe it is a good time to upgrade your service.

What is a Virtual Private Server (VPS)?

VPS Hosting, or Virtual Private Server hosting is the next step once Shared web hosting is no longer a suitable option. It consists of a server that has been partitioned in to segments, and one of those segments is where your website(s) will be stored. The main advantage of VPS hosting is that server resources are allocated to each segment for exclusive use and so your performance is not affected by other websites that are on the same server as yours. You may want to purchase VPS Hosting if there is a high volume of traffic on your website and/ or the data stored on your website will exceed the limits of our web hosting plans.

This type of service is predominantly used by people with high traffic websites, people wishing to upload custom software and configure the server to their specifications. All VPS plans come with a service guarantee.

If you’re considering VPS hosting, please call 1300 694 678 to speak to a member of our solutions team to help you make the right choice.

Do I need a Dedicated Server?

Dedicated hosting is similar to dedicated servers in that that you have dedicated resources of a server, but the server is partitioned into ‘virtual machines’ that have the same appearance as a dedicated server, however you are able to store different domains on each of the partitions. This method of hosting uses the resources of one server which in turn reduces the maintenance cost significantly, which is passed on to the customer.

Dedicated hosting plans consist of your website being stored on its own server. This means that your website has the dedicated resources of a server completely at its disposal. An example commonly used to explain this concept is an apartment block. A shared server would be an apartment block (server) with hundreds of people (or websites) living in it, where as a Dedicated server would have only one person living in an apartment block and would have the whole building to use for itself.

Digital Pacific has several different Dedicated server plans available, both Managed and self managed, each with its own specification of RAM, HDD and traffic limitations. We suggest talking to one of our sales representatives to discuss which server option is suitable for your needs, or we have a ‘Build your own custom server’ wizard, that can guide you through the process.
