Round the Office Roundup

Welcome to our second-ever Round the Office Roundup! This series will give you a sneak peek into the world of what’s going on at Digital Pacific.

First up… the big, important news!

As of last Thursday evening, we have released a whole bunch of new VPS plans. The new plans all offer ultra-fast SSD storage and increased RAM. Peter, who looks after our website, and admittedly, whose name I genuinely thought was Beta for a good few weeks (sorry Beta Peter), has been working hard to get everything looking all polished up and you can now check the Self-Managed and Managed plans out in closer detail! More details to come on these plans in their very own blog post soon.

It’s been quite a week. I don’t even know which part to talk about next. Oh wait yes I do.

Pokemon. Freaking. Go.

To be completely honest, it feels like this subject should be henceforth banned, but it was a spectacularly large part of last week, so it has earned it’s place in the roundup.

micthpokemonWe have more PokeMasters around the Digital Pacific office than well… anything else really. Just the other day, I witnessed a frantic uproar unfold before my desk as it was discovered that Blastoise had been sighted near the microwave. There is a distinct mixture of enthusiasts, who spend their lunch breaks roaming the streets trying to catch ‘em all, and those who just watch on, a faint look of disgust gracing their faces.

Our office, being situated in Circular Quay, is also right nearby several Pokestops, so getting in and out of work on some days has become a matter of wading through the hordes of players camping outside. Okay, maybe not hordes, but a noticeable presence, with or without appropriate costumes. Rather than seeing people walking along, looking out at the bridge or the Opera House, they now loiter in small, hunched-over packs along the waterfront. Sometimes with hats.

Okay, we have to not talk about Pokemon for five minutes.

How about (since they are such a mysterious, tight-knit band of falsetto-singing creative geniuses), I give you some insight into what’s been happening in the world of our Development team. These guys are the little-seen programming force behind many of our front and back-end systems – an example being OnePanel. Where, while I’m on the subject, you can do all sorts of handy things like update your billing information, download invoices, manage your services and account contacts to name a few.

Over the last week, the Dev team have been working on our new checkout experience, which we hope will make the process a lot easier and clearer for new and existing customers alike. Our Dev team also happen to have some of the most eclectic music taste in the entire office. To start the day off right one morning last week, Development Lead Shaun treated us to a spontaneous solo acapella rendition of You’re the Voice by John Farnam. Personally, I think a new segment of our office roundup should be a song recommendation from the Dev team. Since I’m not sure Shaun can be trusted with this just yet, Developer Toby’s song of the week is: Doctor Jones by Aqua

Now I just don’t know who to trust at all. To Toby’s credit, he did ask if we were above mentioning Aqua and I said no. So I really only have myself to blame. Miguel, you are my last hope.

The Friday staff lunch last week was an outrageous hybrid combination of chicken, chips AND pizza. Normally, we follow a strict singular-cuisine format, so everyone was very confused but have come out the other side unscathed and ready to fight another day. Admittedly, and probably to everyone’s delight, I forgot to photograph the affair, so I have found a close enough representation from Google Images instead:

That’s it for the week! Until next time.
